Getting Rid of Kitchen Sink White Spots

If you notice white spots on your sink that just don’t seem to come out, don’t fret. These white spots are harmless. They’re actually lime deposits that come from water that’s rich in minerals. These minerals consolidated on your kitchen counter and now appear as white spots.

To get rid of them, just soak a paper towel in vinegar. Put the towel on top of the white spot, rub the vinegar in then leave the paper towel there for 15 minutes. You’ll be able to simply rub off the spot after 15 minutes has passed.

Keeping Your Kitchen Sponge Clean

Your kitchen sponge is what you’re going to use to clean your dishes and your kitchen sink most of the time. Unfortunately, it’s also a ripe breeding ground for all kinds of bacteria and micro-bacterial life forms.

You know that strange smell you often get from your kitchen sponges? That’s the smell emitted by other living creatures in the sponge. Simply washing your sponge out isn’t enough to clean it, nor is soap. There are two easy ways you can clean your sponges.

One is to boil a pot of water and toss your sponges in. Turn off the heat and leave it there for a few minutes. Pour out the water and your sponges are squeaky clean.

The second method’s even easier. Wet your sponge, then stick it in the microwave. Watch it carefully and heat it in 10 second increments until the sponge steams out all the water. Repeat twice more. Be very careful not to overheat the sponge, or it could catch on fire.

Keep your sponges clean to avoid spreading bacteria while wiping down your sink.

Doing your own shower head replacement can help save you a lot of money on contractors. Having a contractor come in to do the installation for you can easily cost you two or three times more than the new faucet itself.

So how do you replace your old shower head and put in the new Kohler Moxie Showerhead & Wireless Speaker? Here’s our step by step guide.

Step 1) Buying the Moxie Showerhead

The first thing you need to do is make sure you buy the right Kohler Moxie Showerhead. There are 2 kinds of Moxie Showerheads to choose from. You have the Kohler Moxie 2.5 gpm and the Kohler Moxie 2.0 gpm. Do you want more water pressure or less? Choose the Kohler Moxie 2.5 gpm Showerhead for a larger flow, pick the Kohler Moxie 2.0 gpm if you are looking to save on water.

Step 2) Shut Off the Water Supply

Locate your main water valve shut off in your home. It should be the main pipe coming into your house. Turn it to the off position. Verify that you have no more water flowing in by turning on a faucet in the house. No water should come out.

Release any water that’s still sitting in your shower outlet by opening the valve. You should now be able to work without worrying about the water.

NOTE: Turn off your water heater when you shut off your main water supply, or your water heater may overheat.

Step 3) Unscrew the Old ShowerHead

You will need a set of pliers and  a small adjustable  wrench to unscrew your old showerhead. Be careful when you start unscrewing it, if anything starts to turn behind the showerhead, you should stop.  Use an adjustable wrench to loosen and unscrew the old showerhead by turning it counterclockwise. That way you are holding what’s behind the showerhead stationary.

Once you’ve taken off the old showerhead clean off any rust or mineral deposits and old tape or sealant on the shower arm threads.

Step 4) Adding the New Kohler Moxie Showerhead

Wrap Teflon tape in a clockwise direction 2-3 times around the threads of the shower arm. Press the tape into the threads. Screw the new Kohler Moxie Showerhead onto the shower arm in a clockwise direction and hand tighten. Turn on the water, and check for leaks. If leaks occur, carefully tighten the showerhead until there are no leaks or remove the showerhead and apply more Teflon tape.

Step 5) Testing Your New Kohler Moxie Shower Head

Go outside your house and turn your main valve back on. Make sure the main water supply is back on by turning on a different faucet.

Now go back to your showerhead and try both the hot and the cold water. Try adjusting the volume. Make sure everything works properly.

Congratulations! You’ve just changed your shower head. The whole process is really as simple as taking out the old showerhead and putting the new one in.

Fortunately, it’s not that difficult to prevent your Kohler faucets from leaking. Here’s how it’s done.

Kohler Shower Faucets

To prevent a Kohler shower faucet from leaking, all you need to do is add a thin layer of plumber’s tape around the threading.

To begin, unscrew the Kohler shower head from the shower pipe. Set it aside. Take your roll of plumber’s tape and get it as close to exactly parallel to the edge of the threaded pipe head as possible.

Wrap the threaded pipe with your plumber’s tape exactly once. Less than that and the threading will be uneven. More than once and the tape may be too thick. Press the tape into the thread firmly.

Then screw the Kohler shower faucet back on. To really make sure the faucet won’t leak; give it a couple extra twists using a wrench. Wrap the wrench with a thin towel or with tape to make sure the wrench doesn’t scratch the faucet or the pipe.

Kohler Kitchen Faucets

Kohler is widely known for their kitchen faucets. The Coralais in particular is a very popular collection because of its rotating handle and bonnet. While Kohler kitchen faucets are generally very durable and well constructed, even these faucets can leak from time to time. Primarily, this is due to loosened or worn out bearings or O-rings.

To begin with, pick up Service Part Number GP30420 from Kohler’s maintenance website:

Before you do anything to the faucet, make sure the water flow is completely turned off. You can turn off the water flow by going underneath our sink. You should find a knob you can turn that shuts off all flow of to the faucet. Turn this knob clockwise about half a turn, until it feels right. Check that the water is truly off by turning on the faucet. If no water flows, you’re ready to get started.

Look behind the faucet to locate the faucet’s plastic button. Peel off this button. You may need to use a flathead screwdriver or a knife to peel the button out. Set it aside. Under the button is a screw. Unscrew this screw.

Once you’ve unscrewed the screw under the button, the handle should naturally slide out. Set the handle aside, and then unscrew the bonnet as well. The bonnet is the circular half-dome that sat directly under where the handle used to be. It unscrews counter-clockwise.

Now you’re looking at the innards of the faucet itself. Grasp the body firmly and pull. The whole thing should come out of the sink. You’ll now have access to the entire apparatus.

Locate the bearings and the O-Rings. Using the parts you purchased earlier, replace the O-Rings and the bearings. Make sure to tighten everything so there’s no room for leakage.

Now put the body of the faucet back into the sink. Screw the bonnet back on top. Level your eye to the bottom of the bonnet and make sure there’s no space between the bottom of the bonnet and the top of the sink. Then place the handle back on top of the bonnet.

Screw the handle back into place, then put the button back over the screw. You may have to use a knife again to get the button to “pop” back into place.

These two processes will help you prevent your Kohler faucets from leaking, both in the kitchen and in the shower. As always, if you ever suspect that your faucet might be leaking even if just a little bit, it pays to be cautious. One easy way to check is to turn of all the water in your house, then go out and check your water meter. If the water meter is still moving, that means you probably have a leak you need to look into.

How Many Holes Does Your Kitchen Sink Have?

Generally you’ll want to purchase a kohler kitchen faucet that has the same number of holes as your kitchen sink. If you have a 3 hole sink, you’ll want to go with a 3 hole faucet.

There are exceptions to this rule of thumb. You can drill a new hole in your kitchen sink if you really want a more elaborate faucet. You can also “fill” a hole by placing a metal placeholder over it.

Most people will simply choose to go with the existing number of holes in their sink.

2 Popular Kitchen Faucet Sprayer Choices

What kind of sprayer do you want your sink to come with? The 2 most popular choices are integrated sprayers and side sprayers.

Integrated sprayers, known as pull down faucets, are built into the faucet itself. You can simply pull the faucet out and press a button to use it as a sprayer. These are fantastic for 1-hole kitchen sinks.

The other popular choice is the sprayer on the side, known as a kitchen faucet with side spray. You just push down the handle on the sprayer to activate it.

Selecting the Ideal Kitchen Faucet Handle

There are 2 main kinds of handles you can choose from.

First, you have the single handle faucet. This handle turns left and right in a gradient, allowing you to easily go from hot to warm to cold with a sweep of the hand. This kind of handle is ergonomic, simple and easy to use. Most single hole designs use this kind of handle.

Then you have the 2 handle designs. These two handles may or may not take up two additional holes next to the faucet itself, depending on the design. Make your decision based on aesthetics as well as practicality.

The Kitchen Faucet’s Height

One often overlooked factor to consider is the faucet’s height. If you regularly use large pots and pans, you’ll want to make sure you either have a tall faucet or have a faucet that can detach. The last thing you want is for your faucet head to get in the way of you putting your pots in the sink. Taller faucets get more attention if a center piece is what you so desire.

Generally you want to have your faucet match the rest of your kitchen as closely as possible. If your sink is stainless steel, you’ll probably want to go with a stainless steel or brushed nickel finish faucet as well.

Finding the perfect faucet for your kitchen isn’t as hard as it may seem.
